This is a collection of some very exquisite paintings of different glimpses of our beautiful city Kolkata. Our very accomplished painters have created several outstanding work of art with different mediums of painting such as oil, acrylic ,water colour etc. These sights of Kolkata which have been transformed into painting are an artistic creation of aesthetic value. These glimpses are very common to those who live in or who has lived in Kolkata in some point of time.
For those who would like to know more about Kolkata; It is the capital of West Bengal and former capital of British India. It lies in eastern India on the east bank of the river Hooghly,a channel of the river Ganges. This city was known as Calcutta before. In 2001 the Government of West Bengal changed its name to Kolkata. It is the second largest city in India by area .
I have a special liking for this place, not only because I was born here or I am a bengali but also for the reason that I got to visit Kolkata often in my childhood with my loving family during our summer holidays when the air used to be filled with the delicious scent of ripe mangoes, during the grandeur of Durga pujo and in winter breaks when the kitchen and the house used to be filled with delectable aroma of Payesh,Patishapta and Pithe puli. Yes,the holidays of now still remind me of those times and take me back to the carefree days of childhood.
Being the capital city of British India, the city went through rapid indutrialisation during 1772 and it was developed as the `City of Palaces´. Thus there is a strong influence of British architecture in the cities mansions, museums and heritage buildings, which is also illustrated in many of the paintings.
I have vivid memories of the horse drawn carriage also called `Tanga´.The joy rides with my parents and my two brothers in Maidan with the Victoria Memorial in the backdrop and along the St.Pauls Cathedral was always an attraction to us in the winter breaks.
Kolkata the city of Joy has always fascinated those who have been there and I am no exception to it.The indispensable yellow taxis of the Kolkata streets...One knows that they have reached Kolkata when they see the bright yellow ambassadors in the streets.
Kolkata never stops to delight its visitors. The old fashioned hand pulled rickshaws are a common mode of transport be it the narrow lanes or the streets of North Kolkata. These rickshaws have been operating in the city streets since the Colonial times.Although they are slowly vanishing due to the rise in cars ,buses and other modes of modern transport. As a small girl it was always fun to sit on one and enjoy the roller coaster ride.
I must mention here of the cobalt blue buses devouring and connecting every part of the city and the suburbs. These are the buses which everyone living in and around Kolkata are familiar with. They have very simple paper tickets which can be bought from the conductor after boarding the bus. Most of the times the buses can be very crowded too.
Kolkata is one of the few cities in the world still having trams as one of the mode of transportation. If one wants to go back in time and have a peaceful leisurely ride, this is the one perfect ride..
Then there is the Howrah Bridge, decked up in the evenings with lights is a remarkable sight. It is one of the biggest cantilever bridges in the world and only one in India.
The enticing view, sound and smell of the Monsoon season has always been alluring. The monsoons in Kolkata gives a completely new and fresh picture of the place. The water drenched city with the black clouds in the sky gives a picturesque sight..The best leisure activity one can do duing this time is to cuddle up in the bed under a cozy little blanket and read one´s favourite story book..while the heart craves for some hot pakodas and steaming hot tea..
In these delightfully charming paintings a group of proficient painters have presented some exquisite piece of original art work depicting a wide range of diverse scenes from everyday livelihood in Kolkata.
I hope to see you enjoy the paintings as beautiful as they are...with a desire to come back with other collections in the future..
Bye untill then.. :)
