Ardhanariswar by Ujjwal Debnath
42 in x 42 in, Oil and arcylic on canvas
New artwork uploaded....Ardhanarishvara (Sanskrit: अर्धनारीश्वर, Ardhanārīśvara) is a composite androgynous form of the Hindu god Shiva and his consort Parvati (also known as Devi, Shakti and Uma in this icon). Ardhanarishvara is depicted as half male and half female, split down the middle. The right half is usually the male Shiva, illustrating his traditional attributes. The earliest Ardhanarishvara images are dated to the Kushan period, starting from the first century CE. Its iconography evolved and was perfected in the Gupta era. The Puranas and various iconographic treatises write about the mythology and iconography of Ardhanarishvara. While Ardhanarishvara remains a popular iconographic form found in most Shiva temples throughout India, very few temples are dedicated to this deity. Ardhanarishvara represents the synthesis of masculine and feminine energies of the universe (Purusha and Prakriti) and illustrates how Shakti, the female principle of God, is inseparable from (or the same as, according to some interpretations) Shiva, the male principle of God. The union of these principles is exalted as the root and womb of all creation. Another view is that Ardhanarishvara is a symbol of Shiva's all-pervasive nature. [Source -Wikipedia] divine art, mythological themes, bold colors, spiritual imagery, figurative painting, dynamic composition, cultural symbolism, modern expressionism, powerful female figure, contemporary art This striking piece captures the essence of divinity and strength through a powerful female figure. Adorned with traditional jewelry and poised atop two majestic animals, she embodies the balance of femininity and ferocity. The dramatic use of light and shadow enhances the mystical aura, while the fluid brushstrokes evoke a sense of movement, inviting the viewer to explore themes of empowerment and spirituality. This artwork is a captivating addition to any contemporary collection, speaking to both the heart and the mind. The painting features a central figure with multiple arms, symbolizing power and divinity. She is adorned with intricate jewelry and a flowing garment, contrasting with the dark background. Two large animals, likely representing strength, are positioned below her. The color palette includes deep blacks, golds, and hints of white, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow. The background is textured, suggesting a mystical environment, while the figure's pose conveys both grace and authority. The overall composition is dynamic, drawing the viewer's eye to the central figure. This painting is reminiscent of works by artists like Frida Kahlo and Gustav Klimt, who also explore themes of femininity and strength. Kahlo's use of vibrant colors and symbolism parallels the bold palette here, while Klimt's intricate patterns and textures can be seen in the detailed attire of the central figure. Both artists create a sense of the mystical, much like this work, inviting viewers to reflect on deeper meanings behind the imagery.
