The Dilemma of Love II by Anjan Patra (2016)
36 in x 18 in, Tempera On Canvas
...In this 36" x 18" Tempera on Canvas painting by artist Anjan Patra, the artist depicts a scene about the dilemma of love. Anjan Patra B.V.A ( Hons) from Indian Painting from Govt. Art college, has participated in Shows at the Birla Academy, A.I.F.A.C , Academy Annual ,Tathya Kendra, State Acade, National Exhibition, Camlin India. He was awarded The Certificate of Merit from the National Board in 2006. Although figurative in style, Anjan has chosen a less popular, tougher medium of Tempera, on canvas or board, in which he uses naturally ground vegetable pigments & combines them with a paste from the babool tree to use as a binder. This technique results in a superb finish, which is matt & refined, & the longevity even in humid conditions, phenomenal. Anjan has been trained in the school of Indian Painting ,& inspired by Indian miniature paintings, which is reflected in his use of flat colours & clever use of negative & positive space, vis a vis the Western school of painting, which relies more on bringing its subjects to life thorough light, shade & perspective. There is a tendency to give a rich network of intricate patterns symbolizing the labyrinth of the character's thought process & inner beauty or turmoil, as the case may be. Anjan's subjects are a statement on society, reflected through facial expressions & body language of his characters. Sometimes, it is a comment on poverty, other times it's old age & at others,a satire on the wealthy. It is that particular moment which counts, in a language all his own

The Last Sipper by Anjan Patra (2016)
36 in x 48 in, Tempera On Canvas
...This painting is a play on the famous painting "Last Supper". Depictions of the Last Supper in Christian art have been undertaken by artistic masters for centuries, Leonardo da Vinci's late 1490s mural painting in Milan, Italy, being the best-known example. The Last Supper is the final meal that, in the Gospel accounts, Jesus shared with his Apostles in Jerusalem before his crucifixion. The Last Supper is commemorated by Christians especially on Maundy Thursday. The artist Anjan Patra A B.V.A ( Hons), Indian Painting from Govt. Art college, has participated in Shows at the Birla Academy, A.I.F.A.C , Academy Annual ,Tathya Kendra, State Acade, National Exhibition, Camlin India. His highness by Anjan Patra (2011)
48 in x 36 in, tempera on canvas
...His highness figurative art, cultural identity, introspection, contemporary painting, symbolism, strong emotions, textural depth, contrast, narrative art, solitude This evocative piece captures a moment of introspection, blending cultural heritage and personal narrative. The central figure, poised yet contemplative, embodies strength amid vulnerability. Rich textures and contrasting colors invite viewers to explore the depths of emotion and identity. A harmonious balance of light and shadow heightens the sense of solitude, while the detailed background and symbolic elements evoke a story waiting to be discovered. This artwork resonates with anyone reflecting on their journey through life. The painting features a seated figure on a dark wooden chair, positioned slightly to the side, with one leg crossed over the other. The individual is dressed in a light-colored, patterned attire with a contemplative expression. A sword rests beside them on the floor, symbolizing strength. The background consists of a checkered black-and-white floor and a wall painted in muted tones. A doorway leads to a room with red curtains, adding depth to the composition. Above, an eagle decoration contrasts with the softer elements, creating a dynamic visual interplay. This painting bears resemblance to works by artists such as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, who often incorporate strong personal and cultural themes. The use of bold colors and symbolic elements evokes a similar emotional depth, while the composition mirrors the introspective nature found in their portraits. The contrast of light and shadow in this work parallels the dramatic lighting often seen in Mexican muralists, emphasizing the complexity of the human experience.

Waiting for him by Anjan Patra (2015)
60 in x 48 in, tempera on canvas
...Waiting for him figurative art, fashion illustration, neoclassical, modern elegance, color contrast, emotional expression, classical themes, female portrait, oil painting, stylized composition This captivating piece juxtaposes contemporary fashion with classical sculpture, creating a dialogue between past and present. The figure, adorned in a vibrant, ruffled dress, leans pensively against a neoclassical backdrop, hinting at a blend of nostalgia and modernity. The meticulous attention to detail invites viewers to explore the emotional depth of the subject, while the contrasting textures amplify the dynamic interplay of light and shadow. An exploration of identity and heritage, this artwork resonates with anyone who appreciates the intersection of art and life. The painting features a woman in a striking red and orange ruffled dress, standing gracefully against a backdrop of classical architecture. She leans against a wall, her left hand resting thoughtfully on her chin. To her right, a marble statue of a male figure stands in a relaxed pose, adding a sense of timelessness. The color palette includes muted grays and whites for the architectural elements, contrasting sharply with the vibrant hues of the dress. Soft light highlights the textures of the fabrics and the smooth surface of the statue, creating a harmonious balance between the two subjects. This painting recalls the works of contemporary artists like Kehinde Wiley, known for blending classical portraiture with modern subjects. The use of vibrant colors against classical backgrounds also echoes the style of John Currin, who often merges the traditional with contemporary themes. Both artists explore identity and cultural commentary through a similar juxtaposition of styles.
